Robert Wilson Fulton, Jr., Bob to those who knew and loved him, passed peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 8:45 PM Eastern Time, just as the longest day of the year gave way to twilight. For a man whose soul was so deeply woven into the rhythms of nature, the open skies, wild waters, and wooded trails, there could not have been a more poetic farewell from this earth.Bob grew up in Palm Beach County, Florida, where he had the remarkable experience of beginning his teaching career at Seacrest High School in Delray Beach, the very school he had attended as a teenager. It was there that he met the love of his life, Miriam Agnes Grier. Their love story began among chalk dust and lesson plans, and was sealed with a winter wedding on December 22, 1968 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.A proud Vietnam-era veteran, Bob went on to earn an Associate of Arts from Palm Beach Community College, a Bachelor of Science from Florida Atlantic University, and a Master of Education from the University of Florida. He later took an administrative and teaching position at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, working in a unique program that certified upper-division students to work with troubled youth, a calling that reflected his lifelong commitment to service and to the written word.Bob’s career as a writer, editor, and educator spanned decades and touched countless lives. He taught English and writing at the middle school, high school, community college, and university levels, and all those years of shaping students’ work blossomed into a successful career editing authors’ novels. He served as a book reviewer and editor with Cloudy Mountain Books and Russell Dean & Co., and as a columnist for Florida Outdoors Magazine, Amazing Authors, and FictionWriters Club.An award-winning freelance writer for magazines spanning literary, conservation, and education publications, Bob earned recognition in the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Writer’s Contest at Gainesville and was named a top finisher in the Preditors & Editors Reader’s Poll for his Hemingway book review. Over the years, he authored dozens of articles and edited a wealth of novels, leaving his quiet, careful mark on the work of many writers who were fortunate enough to find him.Bob was an active and beloved member of the Florida Outdoor Writer’s Association, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society, the North Carolina Writer’s Network, the Charlotte Writer’s Club, and the North Carolina Poetry Society, communities that reflected both his professional devotion and his genuine love for the craft of storytelling.In 1975, Bob and Miriam returned to her home state of North Carolina, building their home on the family’s farm in Monroe, Union County—the beloved Flint Hill Farm, nestled in the rolling hills that both of them called home for more than four decades. It was here that their children were raised, that grandchildren came to roam, and that Bob found his truest peace. When he wasn’t at his desk, he was on the water, in the woods, or hiking wherever the crowds weren’t—any excuse to be out under the open sky.Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lady Miriam, who passed in January 2021, as well as by his brother and his parents. He is survived by his three children: his son Robert W. Fulton, III (Nikki) of Waxhaw, NC; and his daughters Alison F. Gordon (Mark) of Wilmington, NC, and Jennifer F. Moon of Satellite Beach, FL. He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Logan M. and Brandon M. Fulton and Holden W. Miller of Waxhaw, NC; Emma E., Kaitlyn E., and Makena K. Gordon of Wilmington, NC; and Maleah I. and Kingston C. Moon of Satellite Beach, FL.Bob left this world with the same quiet dignity and love of life that marked his every day. His family takes deep comfort in knowing he is reunited with his Miriam, and that somewhere beyond the horizon, his trails are endless, his ink never runs dry, and his spirit flies free in the wild places he loved so much.
