Loma Tyson

Mrs. Loma Starnes Tyson, age 95, of Monroe, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Hospice of Union County. A Celebration of Loma's life will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Rd., Waxhaw, NC, officiated by Pastor Mike Harris. Loma's family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Loma was born December 26, 1925, in Union Co., NC, a daughter of the late Judge Dwight Starnes and Myrtle Fincher Starnes. After graduating High School, Loma attended Brevard College, where she was a starting point guard for the basketball team. After college, Loma worked at Camp Sutton, and later worked on the dairy farm where she lived for 68 years. Regardless of where she worked, Loma enjoyed what she did, and believed in a job well done. Her true passion was her family, which included her extended church family at Bethlehem United Methodist. She dedicated time to many offices within the church, and was also involved with several church building projects in other countries. Her mission work was also local, as she believed in cooking for anyone in need. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, especially quilting. Loma and her sisters got together every week to sew quilts for all the children and grandchildren. The common thread throughout her life was her love for the Lord and for her family, which leaves behind an incredible legacy for the next generations to cherish. Left to cherish Loma's memory is her daughter, Charlotte Tyson, her sisters; Betty Lou Mosley and Gloria Price, her grandson, Bryan Gilliard (Crystal), her grandson, Jeremy Gilliard, her granddaughter, Jennifer Baucom (Drew), her granddaughter, Justina Gilliard, nine great-grandchildren; Austin, Gracie, Sophie, Morgan, Marli, Beck, Brittany, Wyatt, and Josie, as well as one great-great grandchild, Brenton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death and reunited in eternal life with her husband, JB Tyson Jr., her sister, Audrey Tyson, and her brother, Kenneth Starnes. Although flowers are appreciated, Loma's family requests that memorials in her honor be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, or Hospice of Union County.
