Dorothy Jean Coats Holt, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 16, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family. She had moved from Albemarle to New Bern five years ago to live with her son, Sam, and his wife, Debbie. The family will greet family and friends at Stanly Funeral Home in Albemarle on Sunday, January 19, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm. A celebration of her life will be held at Stony Hill United Methodist Church in Albemarle on Monday January 20, 2025 at 11am. Born on October 20, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Bobbie Lee Morton Coats and the late Lexie Alvis Coats of Benson, N.C. Jean, as she was affectionately known, was a member of Stoney Hill United Methodist Church where she and her beloved husband, Harold, began attending when they were first married. During her life, she worked in several different capacities. She enjoyed her work in banks, serving as a teller and later in the consumer loan department. She also worked at N.C State University as a statistical analyst assistant; however, she prided herself more in all her creative endeavors. For years her handiwork produced designer quilts for interior decorators in Raleigh, and she was also a highly respected seamstress, known for her skill in making clothing. Cooking, crafting, painting, fishing, writing short stories and gardening were joyful activities for her, which she shared with her loved ones. Jean was known for her quick wit and cherished for her sharp sense of humor. She was a beloved and loyal friend to all who knew her. Her light will forever shine! Jean was a loving and devoted wife to her beloved husband who preceded her in death. She is the mother of Iris Holt who preceded her in death and the sister of Roy Alvis Coats who also preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Sam and his wife, Debbie of New Bern. She has three beloved grandchildren, Patrick Medlin of Stem, N.C.; Anna Burleson of New Bern and Samantha Brewer of Mint Hill, N.C. She also has four great grandchildren,Luke Medlin of Holly Springs, Rachel and Charlie Brewer of Mint Hill and Isabelle Burleson of New Bern. Lovingly known as “Nana” and “Mema,” Jean will live on in the hearts of the many people who loved and adored her. She is a bright light that will be missed by all!
